Pelvic Venous Disorder

Pelvic pain is a common issue. It is often caused by problems with blood flow in the veins of your pelvis. Whether it’s called pelvic venous insufficiency, pelvic congestion syndrome, or something else, the underlying issue is the same: blood is not flowing properly through the veins, leading to pooling and pressure. This can result in a dull, aching pain that tends to worsen:

  • At the end of the day
  • Before or during your menstrual period
  • During or after sex
  • After long periods of sitting or standing

Symptoms of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

Symptoms may include varicose veins, frequent diarrhea or constipation, accidental urination when coughing or laughing, and pain during urination. Chronic pelvic pain affects about a third of women, often beginning during or after pregnancy and worsening with subsequent pregnancies.

Nonsurgical

Pelvic Pain is Treatable

We work closely with your primary care provider and gynecologist to fully understand your medical history, symptoms, and imaging results. Using advanced imaging like CT or MRI, we can get a clear picture of what’s happening and determine the best treatment for your unique situation.

Success

Treatments Are Unique to Each Woman

The right treatment depends on you. After reviewing your history and imaging, we may recommend one of the following:

Cross Cut Vein

Stent placement: To relieve vein compression and restore normal blood flow.

Coil

Embolization: To stop blood from refluxing through the veins by using coils or injections.

Syringe

Sclerotherapy: To “close” veins that aren’t functioning properly, allowing blood to reroute through healthier veins.

All treatments are minimally invasive and performed through a small puncture, usually in the groin or neck. The procedures are uterus- and ovary-sparing, performed under moderate sedation, and typically allow you to go home the same day.
